This week’s Alignment Anchor is stewardship.
Colorado has just marked 150 years of statehood, and the United States continues its 250th anniversary year. Those milestones can feel grand enough to belong in museums, speeches and commemorative banners. But anniversaries also ask something quieter of us: What are we caring for now, and what are we passing forward? Colorado’s 150th and America’s 250th are being recognized throughout 2026 as a shared opportunity to reflect, celebrate and reconnect with community.
Here in Centennial, stewardship begins close to home. It looks like paying attention to the sidewalk in front of us, the neighbor beside us, the park we use, the small business we depend on and the local events that help turn a city into a community.
This week offers a beautiful place to practice. Centennial Under the Stars returns Saturday, August 8, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Centennial Center Park, bringing neighbors together for one of the city’s signature summer events. Instead of treating it only as entertainment, consider it a stewardship invitation: bring someone new, introduce yourself to another family, thank a volunteer, pick up what you brought in and help make the evening welcoming for someone who may be arriving alone. (Centennial, CO)
Stewardship also means staying informed without becoming overwhelmed. The City of Centennial’s Community Calendar is a practical way to see what is happening locally, from meetings to community activities. Choose one thing this week to notice on purpose. Civic life becomes less distant when we stop waiting for “someone else” to pay attention.
For families, Arapahoe Libraries continues to offer meaningful ways to connect learning with belonging. The Welcoming & Belonging StoryWalk®, featuring the French-English bilingual picture book Kende! Kende! Kende!, runs July 14 through August 14. It is a simple reminder that community is built through shared stories, curious children, open doors and public spaces that invite everyone in. (Arapahoe Libraries)
Stewardship is also practical during Colorado summer. The Front Range continues through ozone season, and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment issues daily ozone forecasts for the north Front Range from May 31 through August 31. Before heading out, check air quality, choose cooler times for walks, reduce unnecessary driving when possible and check on neighbors who may be more vulnerable to heat or poor air. (CDPHE)
The wider world feels stretched by heat, drought, conflict and uncertainty. Recent global reporting has shown extreme heat and drought affecting communities far beyond Colorado. (AP News) But stewardship gives us a scale we can actually live with.
This week, ask one grounded question:
What can I leave better than I found it?
A conversation. A park table. A neighbor’s day. A local event. A child’s sense of belonging. A community’s shared trust.
Centennial becomes stronger when care stops being an idea and becomes a practice.

Stewardship is big but it doesn’t have to be hard. I’ll definitely be more conscious about what I leave behind, especially at events.
I’d love to see more info in the future about helping with drought and water issues. Feels relevant to stewardship, especially lately.
Such a positive message! I’m all for more people introducing themselves at events. You never know who you might meet or help.
I’m planning to bring my parents to Centennial Under the Stars, they moved here last year. Hope the community is welcoming!
Stewardship really is the right word for caring for our town. I think we forget sometimes that it’s not just up to local government.
So true, stewardship is a community effort, and each of us has a part to play in making Centennial a better place.
Olivia_STotally agree, Olivia. If everyone chips in just a little, it really adds up. Makes the city feel more like home.
Good point about reducing driving during ozone season. I always forget that makes a difference. Time to dust off the bike.
That’s wonderful to hear! Even small changes, like biking instead of driving during ozone season, truly add up to healthier air for everyone.
So true about curiosity and kids. The StoryWalk is a favorite in our house. Shared stories do bring us together.
We love hearing that the StoryWalk is a family favorite! It's special how a shared story can help children, and adults, feel at home in their community.
Wish more articles talked about practical things, not just big ideas. This one actually gave me a few actionable things to try. That’s refreshing.
Honestly, volunteering always sounds intimidating but picking one event to get involved with seems more doable. I might help out at Under the Stars this year.
Hope more parents bring their kids to the StoryWalk! It’s a great way to get outside and try something different.
Agreed! The StoryWalk is a wonderful way for families to spend time together, enjoy the outdoors, and nurture a sense of belonging.
Sometimes it feels like things are too big for us to fix, but I like the idea that stewardship can be as simple as saying hi or checking in with someone.
Thank you for reminding us about the air quality updates. I have asthma and really appreciate those daily forecasts!
I always thought these anniversaries were just about fireworks and flags. Cool to see it reframed as a chance to step up for your city and neighbors.
I wish more people picked up after themselves at parks. It’s such a simple act but makes a real difference. I’ll try to be better about this, too.
You're absolutely right, every small act like picking up after ourselves helps create a more welcoming space for everyone. Thanks for being part of that change!
Appreciate the shoutout for local businesses. Supporting them is a big part of stewardship for sure. They are what gives Centennial character!
Thanks for reminding us that stewardship is daily. We all get busy, but even small things add up to real change.
I think more folks should use the Community Calendar. I always find an event I didn’t know existed. Sometimes it’s a tiny meeting, but those matter too.
Centennial’s 150th feels huge, but it makes sense to break it down into smaller actions. I can definitely pick up trash at the park or meet a neighbor. That feels doable.
That’s exactly it, when we focus on small, everyday actions, stewardship feels accessible and truly meaningful. Thanks for thinking about how you can contribute!
Love the focus on community events. Centennial Under the Stars is one of my favorites every summer. Always feels like the heart of the city!
Centennial Under the Stars is a highlight each year and a real reminder of what makes our city feel like home, thank you for being part of that spirit!
Glad to see a shoutout for paying attention to air quality. The ozone days are real out here. Thanks for the reminder to look out for neighbors when it gets hot, too.
I’ve been meaning to check out the StoryWalk at Arapahoe Libraries! Thanks for including local options for families. Stewardship really can start with just sharing a book with your kid.
You're welcome! The StoryWalk makes it easy and fun to connect with your child and your neighbors, enjoy exploring it together.
