Kearney's Best-Kept Secret Is a Sushi Restaurant — and It's Been There the Whole TimeHidden Gems • Food & Dining • The Kearney Buzz & Beyond There's a restaurant on Watson Drive that Kansas City sushi lovers are quietly making special trips to Kearney for. Chances are you've driven past it without stopping. That changes today. KAJI Japanese Sushi and Grill sits at 751 Watson Drive, Suite C — tucked into the same corridor as Giambalvo's — and if you haven't been in yet, you're overdue. TripAdvisor ranks it with a perfect 5.0 rating, and the reviews don't read like polite small-town loyalty. They read like genuine disbelief that something this good exists here. We fully believe they have the best sushi in all of the Kansas City area, wrote one reviewer who goes multiple times a week. It surpasses all expectations. Everyone we have brought here is truly blown away. The menu covers all the classics — crab rangoon with real crab flavor, gyoza, shrimp tempura rolls, and sushi combinations that regulars rave about, including the Angry Dragon and the Spicy Combo with miso soup. There are also hibachi-style entrées cooked tableside, adding an interactive element that makes it a genuine night-out experience. The teriyaki steak comes up in nearly every review thread. Order it. Service is consistently described as friendly, informative, and fast — even when the restaurant is packed. The room is spotless. The wasabi is the real thing — one reviewer called it the hottest they'd ever had — which is exactly how it should be. KAJI is open Tuesday through Thursday 11am to 9pm, Friday and Saturday 11am to 10pm, and Sunday 11:30am to 9pm. Closed Mondays. Dine-in, takeout, and outdoor seating all available. Kearney is lucky to have this restaurant. More of us should act like it.
