Hello, friends. Beau here.

Apparently I have a new job.

In addition to service dog, professional retriever of things humans drop, door assistant, light-switch operator and household supervisor, I am now a product reviewer.

This seems entirely appropriate.

Especially when the first product involves food.

Welcome to Beau’s Marketplace, where I’ll be putting dog products, gear and other useful finds through a very scientific evaluation process.

Does it work?Does it make life easier for dogs or their people? Is it worth the money?

And, where applicable, does it contain snacks?

First into the testing laboratory: the Houndsy Kibble Dispenser.

What Is This Thing?

The Houndsy takes the usual bag-bin-scoop-bowl routine and turns it into something considerably simpler.

My humans fill the dispenser with dry kibble, put the appropriate stainless-steel portion bowl into the drawer, pull the lever, and the bowl fills to the selected amount.

Houndsy says the internal BPA-free storage bin holds approximately 25 to 30 pounds of dry kibble, depending on kibble size, and the interchangeable portion bowls range from ½ cup to 3½ cups.

In Beau terminology:

Human pulls lever. Food appears.

Engineering is magnificent.

Why My Family Likes It

Here is where this product gets particularly interesting for us.

Accessibility matters in our house.

Traditional dog feeding can mean opening a large container, reaching into it, measuring kibble with a scoop, bending down and getting everything into a bowl without creating a crunchy little minefield across the floor.

Houndsy specifically designed its dispenser so the lever can be operated higher up rather than requiring someone to bend completely down to scoop food. The elevated version places the feeding bowl about eight inches from the floor.

That makes this more than attractive dog furniture.

It can simplify a repetitive household task.

And around here, products that create a little more independence and make everyday routines easier get our attention.

The Portion-Control Advantage

There is another feature my humans appreciate considerably more than I do.

Portion control.

The serving bowl itself determines how much food is dispensed. Houndsy currently offers ½-, ¾-, 1-, 1½-, 2-, 2½- and 3½-cup bowls. Pull the lever and the dispenser fills that bowl.

This reduces the "Was that one scoop or two?" problem when different people feed the dog.

Personally, I see no problem with accidental double portions.

Management disagrees.

Can a Labrador Defeat It?

Important question.

Houndsy uses an auto-locking mechanism that requires the lever to be lifted slightly before it can travel. The company says the design is intended to reduce accidental servings by clever dogs and toddlers.

Challenge noted.

So far, however, this appears to be one appliance in the house where opposable thumbs maintain an unfair competitive advantage.

The Beau Report Card

Convenience: 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
One lever. Dinner. Excellent system.

Portion consistency:
🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
My humans call this a benefit. I remain neutral.

Accessibility:
🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
This is the feature that makes Houndsy especially interesting in our household.

Appearance:
🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
It looks more like furniture than a giant plastic dog-food bin sitting in the corner.

Beau's ability to operate it independently:
🐾
Deeply disappointing.

Beau’s Verdict

The Houndsy isn't a necessity. A container and scoop will still feed a dog perfectly well, and its starting price makes this something I would consider a convenience purchase rather than a basic piece of pet equipment.

But that's also why Beau's Marketplace exists.

Sometimes a product solves a small, repetitive problem so well that it genuinely makes daily life easier.

For households concerned about bending, measuring portions, accessible routines, kibble storage or simply eliminating the giant bag of dog food sitting in the corner, the Houndsy is worth a look.

And if your dog happens to be a Labrador who believes every meal should include an encore?

The locking lever may be worth the price all by itself.

Who knew a kibble dispenser could get a five-paw rating? I love this series already. Can’t wait for more Beau-approved picks!

Not sure if I’d spend that much on a fancy feeder, but I do appreciate that you point out it’s not a must-have. Some gadgets just make life easier.

That’s a great point. We wanted to be clear that, while convenient, the Houndsy is more of a nice-to-have than an essential, just one of those small luxuries that can make daily life a bit smoother.

Portion control is great, but my rescue mutt would still manage to guilt someone into a second helping. That’s his talent!

We feel your pain, no gadget can override the power of puppy eyes, but at least portion control can keep those extra helpings in check for the rest of the household!

I wonder if it would work with bigger pieces of kibble? My Great Dane’s food is pretty chunky.

More independence for everyone! Sounds like this dispenser could help older folks keep caring for their pups a bit longer. Thanks for sharing, Beau.

I like that it’s BPA-free. A lot of plastic pet bins don’t mention that. The stainless bowls are a nice touch too.

Carlos VegaGood point about BPA. Not many companies mention it! I also like how it doesn’t look like a bright plastic tub in the kitchen.

I want to see video of Beau trying to use the dispenser! Maybe for the next review?

That review made me laugh out loud. But seriously, the accessibility angle is big. Might get this for my aunt’s dog if it goes on sale.

Noel CarterI feel the same way, Noel! My mom uses a regular scoop but struggles with the big bin sometimes. If there’s a good sale, I’ll be tempted too.

It’s cool but honestly I just keep my dog’s kibble in an old popcorn tin. The scoop system works fine for us.

I'm happy to see a review from a dog's point of view! It actually matters how something works in real daily life, not just in ads. Go Beau!

Thank you! We’re happy you enjoyed Beau’s perspective, after all, who better to judge dog gear than a dog living with it every day?

Ha, love the “was that one scoop or two?” problem. Story of my life with a busy house. Portion control would save so much food (and money)!

    • AC
      AmiLynne Carroll Author· Oct 9, 4:10 PM

Exactly! The built-in bowl sizes really cut down on portion confusion, which is not only easier but can save food (and money) over time in a busy household.

    Rachel H. S.· Oct 8, 1:26 PM

My parents would love not having to bend down all the way to feed the dog. Nice that it looks like furniture, too. Most dog gear isn’t cute!

We agree, making feeding easier and adding a touch of style to the room are both big wins, especially for families who appreciate accessibility and good design.

Omg the locking lever! My boxer is clever and has opened so many containers. I’m curious if this would finally stop him.

    • AC
      AmiLynne Carroll Author· Oct 8, 8:19 AM

Thanks for your comment! The Houndsy's locking lever is specifically designed to outsmart both clever dogs and toddlers, and so far, opposable thumbs are still required to operate it, your boxer might finally meet his match.

    • KH
      Kim H.· Oct 8, 9:40 AM

Kevin TranI wondered about that too! My border collie figured out how to nose open the last two bins we had. Might actually try this if your boxer can’t break in either.

    Lila Dorsey· Oct 7, 6:21 AM

The bowl size options are cool. I sometimes forget if I fed my lab already, so this would help with keeping things straight.

Lila DorseySame here! I’ve definitely double-fed my beagle before because I forgot. Having set portions would probably save me from so many mix-ups.

Looks nice, but the price sounds high for a feeder. Still, the convenience is tempting, especially not messing up the portions so much.

We’re glad you and your beagle enjoyed the review! The portion bowls really help keep servings consistent, especially in busy households or when multiple people help with feeding.
